The BENU marks the dawn of the manufacture. With its puristic design on the outside and the hidden finesse inside the case, it reflects the heritage of Moritz Grossmann but is clearly anchored in the here and now.
In the three-part gold or platinum case, nearly 200 hand-crafted parts interact with great precision. Visible through the sapphire-crystal caseback, they manifest innovative artisanship.
The bezel
A slender gold or platinum bezel frames the solid-silber dial. With its crisply defined Arabic numerals, the watch radiates individuality and discreet elegance. The brown-violet or brown hands with sharp tips display the same unusual hue as the exposed screws inside the movement.
The signet
In the middle of the upper dial hemisphere, beneath the “12”, the watch displays the traditional signature MORITZ GROSSMANN GLASHÜTTE I/SA. The small arc above the name symbolises the brand-typical cutout in the 2/3 plate of the movement which showcases its beating heart, the screw balance, when viewed through the sapphire-crystal caseback.
The subsidiary second
Following an old tradition, the subsidiary seconds dial stands above the “6” and is slightly recessed to allow the hour and minute hands to hover as closely as possible over the dial. The precision scales and the slenderness of the hands is a reminder that a watch is intended to keep time accurately. Indeed, its aesthetic clarity is reminiscent of a Glashütte precision instrument from the 19th century.
The sapphire-crystal
A sapphire-crystal glass protects the dial. It has an antireflective coating on one side to prevent viewdisturbing reflections of incident light. The extra-thick slightly cambered glass has a precision-ground chamfer that refracts the geometry of the succinct minute scale.
The crown
The shape of the crown is both aesthetic and functional. A circumferential recess makes it easy to pull the crown for setting the time, and its angled flutes add leverage for winding. The lugs to which the strap is fastened are endowed with a tapered chamfer that creates a flowing silhouette.
The butterfly clasp
The ends of the carefully hand-stitched alligator strap are secured with a butterfly clasp that makes it easy to put on and take off the watch. It is also crafted from gold or platinum and features a pushbutton catch.
The verso
The antireflective-coated sapphire-crystal display back exposes the rich inner life of the watch with its remarkable depth. The curved, milled cutout of the German silver 2/3 plate, a typical Grossmann hallmark, places the spotlight on the large screw balance and its breathing hairspring. The plate itself bears the hand-engraved brand signature MORITZ GROSSMANN GLASHÜTTE I/SA accompanied by traditional data concerning the movement. Three screwed gold chatons attract just as much attention as the white sapphire bearing jewels and the screws that are naturally annealed over an open fire. Wide striping on the plate and the three-band snailing on the ratchet wheel complement the suave orchestration of a harmonious opus.
The movement serial number on the plate and the case number on the screwed back allow coming generations to trace the history of the watch to its origins.
This compact work of art, composed of 188 individual parts, clearly stands for ORIGIN OF A NEW TIME.
